Irresponsible dog owners ignore Lockerbie nature reserve manager's plea to clean up after pets

Irresponsible dog owners have ignored a Lockerbie nature reserve’s manager’s plea to clean up after their pets.

Jim Rae collected 28 bags of dog dirt from a one kilometre stretch of path last week which prompted a Facebook post calling on pet owners to “act responsibly”.

But he revealed in a second post at the weekend that the problem has actually become even worse.

Mr Rae said: “Despite last week’s publicity the number of dog poos picked up and bagged this Saturday, along the same 1km stretch of path, has risen from 28 to 37 bags.

“Once again the irresponsibility, indeed criminality, displayed by certain dog owners appals me.”

Mr Rae, a retired teacher, established the nature reserve at Eskrigg, more than 30 years ago.

He received the British Empire Medal in 2019 for his work there and for the community in general.

The reserve has developed greatly over the years and is hugely popular with dog walkers and families.

His latest Facebook post left many followers of the reserve’s page angry at the actions of the irresponsible pet owners.

Kathrine Bambridge said: “This is so disgusting. You would think these people would appreciate the amazing place they get to walk their dogs.”

And Debbie Ball stated: “It’s disgusting.”
