A man who is believed to be from Ireland was escorted from the Vatican by police on Wednesday after shouting abuse at Pope Francis.
The Pontiff was in the middle of his weekly general audience when he was interrupted by the maskless man.
From the back of the Paul VI hall, the man stood up and began gesturing and shouting at the Pope in English, as well as Italian and Spanish.
"The Church is not the way God wants it," he said in English.
He then added: "God rejects you, Father. You're not a king."
The man was quickly escorted from the building by Vatican police and a Swiss Guard.
A Vatican source is reported as saying that the man, who appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s, was an Irish national living in Rome, according to the Daily Mail.
The paper adds that he "had made similar outbursts in several Roman basilicas in the past".
People attending events in the Vatican are required to wear FFP2 face masks, and the man was seen clutching a face covering in his hands.
Pope Francis continued his address during the outburst and responded to the scenes by offering his prayers for the man in question.
"A few minutes ago we heard a man who was screaming, shouting, who had some kind of problem," Pope Francis said at the end of the general audience.
"I don't know if it is physical, psychological or spiritual, but he is a brother of ours who has a problem.
"I would like to finish by praying for him, our brother who is suffering, poor man.
"If he's yelling it is because he is suffering, has some problem. Don't be deaf to the needs of this man."
