Irish youngster Evan Ferguson bags first Premier League goal in Brighton loss

Ireland youngster Evan Ferguson netted his first Premier League goal in Brighton's 4-2 defeat to Arsenal on New Year's Eve.

The 18-year-old came on in the 60th minute of the second half as the Seagulls were struggling against the league leaders.

And Ferguson made a great impact as he showed great strength to muscle William Saliba off the ball before cooly lifting it over Gunners keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

It was a sensational moment for the Bettystown native who only signed his first professional contract in October on his 18th birthday.

Ferguson was also called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time in November.

Prolific in front of goal at underage level, Ferguson will now hope to get a run in a Brighton team that has been in a rich vein of form this season.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi recently said that he wanted to give Ferguson more opportunities.

"He is a good player, very good, very young but very good player; and I would like to let him to play [more] I don't know how much time is in the game but I would like to give him the possibility [to play more].

"And for me, it was a surprise, because I knew him, but not [as much as I do in] this last part this last period I know him better and he was a surprise.

"I always I encourage the young player not only the young player but the younger player more. I want the younger players to not think to make a mistake, they don't have to be afraid, they have to enjoy, to think, and to play."
