Irish weather takes major turn as thunderstorms forecast but it's not all bad news

Many parts of Ireland are waking up to the all-too-familiar sight of grey skies and rain after several weeks of sunshine and scorching temperatures.

The good news is that the heat doesn't look to be going anywhere as temperatures will remain in the 20s for most of the week ahead but blue skies will become far less frequent.

Thunderstorms are also forecast in the coming days as conditions become muggier, with plenty of rainfall expected across the country.

Already on Saturday morning, Cork and Limerick have experienced more than 13mm of rainfall, though some areas will escape the worst of the rain this weekend.

Met Eireann's forecast makes it sound like most of the country will have to break out the unusual combination of shorts and umbrellas because it will remain remarkably humid but the threat of rain will persist across the weekend, while thunderstorms are possible early next week.

Of Saturday, a Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Today will be warm and humid. Rather cloudy with some spells of hazy sunshine. Scattered showers today, mainly in the south and west this morning, will later spread to other parts. Some showers will be heavy or possibly thundery with the chance of spot flooding. Highest temperatures of 19 to 24 degrees, in a light to moderate southeasterly breeze.

"Very mild and muggy tonight. A few showers will continue overnight, heaviest in the north or west with possible thundery downpours. Many places will be dry with a mix of cloud and clear spells at first, before some mist and fog forms overnight. Temperatures will not fall below 13 to 16 degrees, with light southeasterly winds."

"Quite cloudy to start with lingering mist or fog slowly clearing," the spokesperson said of Sunday. "Warm sunny spells will develop as the day progresses. There will also be scattered slow moving showers, with heavy falls possible locally later. Humid, with highest temperatures of 20 to 24 or perhaps 25 degrees with a light southerly breeze."
