Irish weather: Good news from Met Eireann after miserable start to Sunday

If any weekend summed up Irish weather, it could well be this one.

Saturday was probably the nicest day of the year so far, with some parts of the country enjoying 22C temperatures and most areas basking in sunshine.

Sunday has started very differently, however, with most waking up to grey skies, plenty of rain and noticeably cooler conditions.

Don't pack your shorts away just yet, however, as Sunday seems to be little more than a blip before pleasant conditions return to Ireland.

Most of the rain and gloomy conditions are set to clear today by this afternoon before the return of sunny spells tomorrow, Monday May 15, but temperatures will not return to Saturday's highs.

As the week goes on, however, temperatures will gradually rise with Tuesday reaching 17C in some areas and highs of 18C forecast on Wednesday and Thursday.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "High pressure will dominate our weather this week, bringing largely dry conditions and a good deal of sunshine. Feeling cool at the start of the week, becoming warmer as the week goes on."

High pressure is expected to bring pleasant weather into next weekend, with temperatures reaching the high teens or potentially even the low twenties, and it will remain generally dry, according to the national forecaster.

This is backed up by online weather expert Alan O'Reilly, who runs the popular Twitter account @CarlowWeather.

Fielding questions about what kind of weather to expect next weekend, he wrote: "For those asking about next weekend, the latest weather model charts show it mainly settled for Saturday and maybe just some showers Sunday. Still subject to change but looking better."
