Ireland U21s 2-2 Ukraine U21s
Bosun Lawal was the hero for Ireland’s Under 21s last night as they stormed back from 2-1 down to get a credible draw against Ukraine.
Having trailed twice in the match - each time to penalties converted by Ukraine’s star players, Artem Bondarenko and Sikan, Ireland showed commendable spirit to continually fight back.
And they eventually got their rewards, Lawal’s goal earning the draw and the headlines, after his run started inside his own half and ended with the ball hitting the Ukrainian net.
That came eight minutes from the end, Ukraine taking their initial lead when Sikan converted a 16th minute penalty. Ireland responded to that with a sustained period of pressure, Andrew Moran going close on a couple of occasions, before he finally scored five minutes into first-half injury-time.
When Bondarenko restored Ukraine’s lead on 73 minutes, it looked like it would be their night, especially as Conor Carty, one of five debutants, had unluckily been denied a goal just minutes beforehand.
But just when it looked like it was slipping away from Ireland, Lawal had his moment.
