Iarnrod Eireann are set to reintroduce quiet carriages on their Heuston-Cork services on a trial basis.
The quiet carriages can be booked online and will be clearly identified through purple branding on the exterior of trains. They have been re-established to assist customers who may have sensory issues but can be booked by anyone looking for a noise free journey.
They were previously scrapped due to widespread mobile phone usage onboard Irish Rail services. However, there have been repeated calls for their reinstatement over the years, including appeals from a Dublin South West Councillor as recently as August.

A spokesperson for Irish Rail said: “We are delighted to bring back the option of a quieter carriage on our Heuston to Cork services.”
“This quieter carriage will not only be popular with those who have sensory challenges, but also for those who wish to relax and enjoy their journey without excessive use of mobile phones or other devices, or who may have some work to do, which requires quietness.”
Iarnrod Eireann did not comment on whether additional services besides Heuston-Cork would implement quiet carriages. The initiative comes into effect from today onwards and is free of charge to customers.
