Irish Rail passengers will have to wait until early 2024 for the full return of the trolley service.
The service is returning to the Cork to Dublin line next month under a new provider, Carriage Food Services. Customers will be able to purchase hot drinks, snacks and sandwiches from the trolley.
Irish Rail will have a full tender process for the catering for the rest of the network, but this isn't expected to be completed until early 2024. They hope that when the service begins operating on the Cork to Dublin line, they will see a reduction of "some of the inflated costs being quoted for full catering provision across our Intercity network".

Barry Kenny, Corporate Communications Manager with Irish Rail told Newstalk: "It will be next month for the Cork to Dublin route - that obviously benefits Limerick and Kerry lines as well.
"We're doing a full tender then for the national network. I've got to be honest with you: you're looking at early 2024 for that".
He added that Irish Rail "would have loved" to reintroduce the service straight away on all routes but "unfortunately it wasn't possible within the funding we had".
