Irish Rail has confirmed a date for the return of the beloved trolley service, which was halted during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many regular passengers had been living in the hope that as soon as restrictions were lifted, the tea and snacks cart would soon be rolling through the carriages again, however, staff shortages then became an issue.
Finally, confirmation has been given by Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport, James O’Connor TD, who said the on-board catering services on Irish Rail services are due to return in March.

Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade has reportedly assured Deputy O’Connor that services will be back from the end of next month, albeit on a phased basis.
The Cork East TD met with Fianna Fáil TDs, senators, and Mr Meade in Leinster House on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing expansion of rail services.
Deputy O’Connor said: “I’m delighted that Irish Rail has confirmed restoration of on-board train catering will be taking place in the coming months.
“On-board services were deeply missed by those who are regular commuters on Irish Rail services so this is very welcome news.
“It is understood the reinstatement of the service will be done on a phased basis commencing with the Dublin-Cork line servicing Portlaoise, Portarlington, Thurles, Limerick Junction, and Mallow."
Among the other topics discussed at today’s meeting was the provision of late-night services and increasing the overall rail funding in Budget 2024.
“We heard that further capacity could only be achieved on foot of new locomotives due to arrive to Ireland in the second quarter of next year,” Deputy O’Connor went on to say.
“There is the potential for up to three new trains per month to commence deliver into Ireland next year with a major recruitment programme underway to hire new drivers and service personnel.”
