Irish people fume after 1975 singer mocks girl with Irish name with 'gravel' jibe

Irish twitter users have not reacted well to the lead singer of The 1975's mocking of the name Dervla.

The band just released their fifth album - Being Funny in a Foreign Language - and were doing a meet-and-greet and a signing for fans, with Matty Healy in attendance.

Having queued up, a girl decided to record her interaction with the star, but it has now gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

After Matt asked her what her name was, she replied ' Dervla', which elicited a 'WHAT?!' from the 33-year-old.

He then opined: "Dervla? That sounds like something you move gravel with'.

The bemused girl then shared the clip on Twitter, where it has since been noticed by a fair few angry Irish men and women after being re-shared by Pop Crave.

One person fumed: "Brits don't deserve the beautiful names of our native language. Not for one second."

"We need to stop being ashamed of our culture and stop allowing Brits to believe they're superior." added a second.

A third noted: "Coming from a man whose name sounds like something you repeatedly wipe the soles of your feet with entering a house"

A fourth poked fun at the events of the last week, adding: "Looking forward to the Sky interview where he's asked whether or not greater education on the subject matter should be considered"

To be fair, he did manage to spell the name correctly.
