A motorist with a newly minted driving license was dealt a blow just three days after passing their test after they were stopped by gardai.
The driver was stopped on Friday by officers on a busy Irish road after being spotted travelling at a huge speed.
Gardai stopped the car after it was seen on the N3 at a speed of 167kmph in a 100kmph zone.
Members of the force in Cavan were on patrol at the time, and when they pulled over the motorist they discovered several road safety breaches.
The driver was an unaccompanied learner permit holder who has his license for a total of three days.
There were no L plates displayed on the vehicle or no NCT and when detected, the driver was also holding his mobile phone.
Gardai subsequently seized the car.
A statement from the Cavan Monaghan division on Saturday read: "Cavan Roads Policing Unit continue patrolling the N3.
"Yesterday a driver was detected travelling at 167kmph in a 100kmph zone. The driver on this occasion was an unaccompanied learner permit holder who has his licence a total of three days.
"There were no L plates displayed or no NCT. When detected the driver was also holding his mobile phone. Needless to say the car was detained under Section 41 Road Traffic Act."
In a separate incident, gardai detected another motorist on the N3 between Belturbet and Butlersbridge travelling at 160kmph in a 100kmph zone.
This driver was also a learner, with the car taken off the road and court to follow.
