Irish McDonald's fans raging as restaurant announces major change to menu favourite

Irish McDonald's fans are not happy with the latest changes the fast food giant has announced affecting its McFlurry icecreams.

Taking to social media, officials announced that all plastic spoons will be taken away meaning popular ice cream products will be served with a paper-based alternative.

In a post earlier on Tuesday, McDonald's said it was "cancelling the McFlurry spoon."

A spokesperson wrote: "We’re making a big change…That’s right, we’re cancelling plastic cutlery and replacing it with a new sustainable, paper-based material in all of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland.

"We’re doing this to remove over 850 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain a year, as part of our Plan for Change."

Despite the positive environmental change, it has sparked a debate online and many customers have been left raging.

One McDonald's customer wrote: “Paper straw can barely handle a large coke, how the hell is it gonna handle a McFlurry.”

Another pleasded: "Please don’t make the spoon out of paper. The paper straws are already an abomination."

A third person responded to the news by saying: “The paper ones are rubbish. No strength to them. I hope this means the Flurries will actually be mixed when they are made.”

Others were in support of the change, with one person saying: "Ok. Doing that is great. But what about the cups with the plastic lids?”

Another replied: "This is brilliant and will make such a difference. If everyone makes small changes then combined it makes a huge positive change to the environment.”
