Irish Cup hero Dougie Wilson hoping Ballymena United can finish on a high

Dougie Wilson has challenged Ballymena United to use their Irish Cup delight as motivation for the rest of the season.

Wilson scored a superb free kick to seal a 2-0 win over Larne on Friday night's to seal their spot in May's showpiece final against Crusader in a rerun of last season's final.

Between then there are important league games to play and Wilson has his sights set on seventh place and a European play-off spot, with tonight's game at home to Glenavon crucial to that aim.

"There's still places to play for in the league, we've a European play-off to play for," said the defender.

"We have to try and pick up as many points as we can between now and the end of the season and see where it takes us.

"Monday night is massive for us now and we are fully concentrating on that.

"We will enjoy our celebrations but then the focus switches to Glenavon."

Wilson's free kick was fit to win any game with the former Dungannon Swifts man happy to be handed the responsibility.

"I've been at them to get me on free kicks all season and I've been overlooked," he said.

"Thankfully Nathan who does the set pieces said for me and Ross to be over the free kicks.

"When I set the ball down I just thought to myself that I fancied it, thankfully it went in.

"I've scored a couple of free kicks but the boys don't believe me.

"So yeah I've a couple but I don't think any as good as that."

Friday night's win was a first victory in 12 for the Sky Blues, and Wilson was not only delighted to get back to winning ways, but also to shut out the league leaders.

"We know results haven't been good enough over the last while, but to be fair the performances have been there in some of the games," he said.

"We've been unlucky in a few of the games, but we got that luck tonight.

"We've worked on our shape all week and I thought we carried it out to a man.

"We've been beaten by the odd-goal two or three times in the last ten games where we maybe could have nicked a point.

"To be able to keep a clean sheet tonight was brilliant.

"Larne are the best team in the country so we knew they were going to come at us.

"When we got the second goal it just gave us that bit of a cushion, which we needed to be fair because they were starting to put us under a bit of pressure.

"So I was happy to get the goal and we saw it out well after that."
