Irish boxer dreaming of selling out Pairc Ui Chaoimh with legendary trainer in his corner

Burgeoning Irish boxing star Callum Walsh has stated that he intends on selling out Pairc Ui Chaoimh in his native Cork someday.

The 21-year-old is a hot prospect and has already made waves since moving stateside as he was taken on by legendary trainer Freddie Roach after putting on an impressive sparring display in his Wild Card gym based in Hollywood.

Roach, who has trained the likes of Manny Pacquiao and Oscar de la Hoya, even donned a Cork GAA jersey in this social media post.

In it, he wrote: "Me, Freddie and 50,000 people in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, that’s the dream."

He has compiled a 4-0 professional record, with his last fight in August being the first time he hasn't secured a knockout.

Walsh did have his opponent Benjamin Whitaker on the canvas within a few moments of the opening bell but the journeyman managed to make it through the six-rounder.

But he was outclassed by Walsh, who landed far more punches than the American throughout the fight, as UFC President Dana White watched on from ringside.

All three judges scored the 154lbs bout 60-53 in the Irishman's favour.

Walsh said after the fight that he hurt his left hand with the first punch he threw.

He is back in the ring on November 3 in what will be his longest fight so far - with a duration of eight rounds as he continues to build himself up as a pro.

Like his last bout, it will be broadcast on on UFC Fight Pass as the promotion's kingpin Dana White is another big name in combat sports to have taken an interest in him.

Walsh signed a broadcasting deal earlier this year for his fights to be shown on the platform.

And White is very excited about what the future holds for the youngster.

He told Yahoo Sports: “We’ve had a lot of success with the Irish here with Conor [McGregor] and I think this kid could become extremely popular with the Irish.

“I’m not saying he’s going to be [as popular as] Conor, but he’s a great kid and he has a really fun fighting style. We can take him to New York and Boston and really build him into something.”
