Ireland weather: Subzero temperatures due as Met Eireann forecast unusually settled weekend

Ireland is set for a dry but cloudy weekend, as temperatures plummet below zero in some areas overnight.

In its latest forecast Met Eireann said “very little rain” is forecast for Saturday and Sunday, and the weather will remain “dry and rather cloudy with limited bright intervals”, with “occasional light rain and drizzle affecting western coastal areas”.

It comes as Ireland enjoys an unusually settled January weather-wise.

Saturday will be dry and cloudy, with temperatures in single figures during the day and dropping as low as -1C overnight with frost possible.

In a post on its website, Met Eireann said: “Today will be dry for most areas and overall cloudy. There may be occasional patches of drizzle, mainly in Connacht and Ulster. A few locations will see some bright or sunny periods.

“Light southwest winds will be more moderate towards the northwest. Highest temperatures of 7C to 9C.

“Remaining dry tonight with a good deal of cloud and some clear spells, just a little drizzle at times in the west. Mist patches will form in light to moderate southwest winds which will back southerly overnight.

“Lowest temperatures of 1C to 5C generally, dipping to -1C under any prolonged clear spells locally with a touch of frost possible.”

Looking ahead to Sunday, the national forecaster said Ireland can expect more of the same.

It said: “Sunday will bring a mix of cloud and some sunny spells. There will be a few drizzle patches in western and southern coastal counties, becoming more persistent in the evening, but otherwise it will be a dry day.

“Highest temperatures of 6C to 9C. Light to moderate southerly winds, fresher near western and northwestern coasts.

“Patchy light rain or drizzle will continue overnight in Atlantic counties, with dry weather further east. A good deal of cloud with some occasional clearer spells.

“Lowest temperatures of 3C to 7C, but possibly dipping down to 0.”

Next week is expected to remain mainly settled, with temperatures “on the milder side of average”, however some rain could move in mid week.
