Ireland weather: Met Eireann warn of strong 'gale force' winds to hit the country with a wet weekend of rain forecast

Met Eireann have warned that 'gale force' winds will hit certain coastal areas of the country today.

In its latest weather forecast, it said Thursday will be mostly dry with sunny spells and temperatures of up to 17C, though there will be some scattered showers in Connacht and Ulster.

Winds from the southwest will be fresh and gusty but will be strong to near gale force at times along coasts.

On Thursday night, the gusts will die down to moderate southwesterly winds. Overnight it will be mainly dry and mild with lowest temperatures of 7C however, rain will develop in the west of Ireland and will become heavy and spread to the rest of the country by the morning.

There are constant showers forecast for the upcoming weekend and into next week as the miserable wet weather continues.

Here is Met Eireann's outlook for the remainder of the week:

Friday : Rain on Friday morning will clear to scattered heavy showers and sunny spells in the afternoon. Highest temperatures 13 to 16 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest to west winds.

Showers will ease and become confined to western coasts on Friday night and it'll be dry for a time with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees with light to moderate southwest winds.

Saturday : There'll be further afternoon showers on Saturday, most frequent in the west and north, and becoming confined to the west coast overnight. Highest daytime temperatures 13 to 17 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, the lower values in the north, and falling back to 10 or 11 degrees overnight.

Sunday : There'll be a few further showers on Sunday with temperatures up to 18 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds, freshening through the day.

Monday : The unsettled weather continues in to next week with further showers or longer spells of rain on Monday with temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees as moderate winds become northwesterly for a time.
