Ireland weather: Met Eireann's update on path of Storm Malik as warning issued for one county

Storm Malik is set to batter certain parts of Europe over the weekend with severe gales and strong winds expected.

The storm, named by Denmark's Met Office, will blast several coastal regions as it tracks eastward.

While threat to life warnings have been issued in the UK, it seems Ireland will escape the worst of the storm.

The weather system will pass over the northwest of Ireland on Saturday morning, bringing gusts of up to 100kph in some areas.

A status yellow wind warning for Donegal is in effect until 9am, with the alert stating that "southwest to west winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 kmh with gusts of up to 100 kmh, higher in coastal areas and on high ground".

In an update on Friday night, Met Eireann said: "Tomorrow will start cloudy, breezy and mild with outbreaks of rain cloud with rain moving southwards across the country.

"There'll be fresh to strong & gusty westerly winds, very strong in the NW (Storm Malik). Drier, brighter and cooler conditions later in the morning and afternoon."

As for the national forecast for Ireland, a forecaster said on Saturday morning: "Starting cloudy and breezy with a narrow band of rain in the north quickly moving southwards across the country.

"There will be fresh to strong and gusty westerly winds, strongest in the northwest. Drier, brighter and cooler weather will follow from the north to all areas through the late morning and afternoon as winds turn northwesterly and ease. Highest temperatures will be in the morning, ranging between 8 and 11C.

"Dry and cold early tonight with clear spells. It will become cloudier overnight with some patchy drizzle developing in western counties by morning. Lowest temperatures of -1 to 3C, coldest in the south and east with frost developing.

"Winds will be light, but will strengthen on western coasts by morning.

"Mostly dry to start on Sunday, but outbreaks of light rain and drizzle in the west during the morning will gradually extend eastwards.

"Then through the afternoon a band of heavier rain accompanied by strong and gusty westerly winds will push into the west and quickly move across the country to all areas later in the afternoon and early evening, with a clearance to scattered showers following. Winds will reach gale force in northern and northwestern coastal areas. Highs on Sunday of 8 to 11C.

"Dry in most areas Sunday night with clear spells, but a scattering of showers will persist, mostly over Ulster where a few may turn wintry over high ground. Lows of 2 to 6C in blustery northwest winds, strong on northern and western coasts."

As for early next week, they added: "A fresh northwesterly flow over the country will bring plenty of cloud [on Monday], with showers developing mainly in the west and north, with a lot of dry weather and a few bright spells elsewhere. Highs of 7 to 9C in moderate westerly winds, fresh and gusty on northwestern coasts.

"A cloudy night with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle at times, especially over Ulster. Winds will be moderate to fresh westerly. A mild night with lows overnight not falling below 6 or 7C.

"We remain in a westerly flow through midweek, with our weather coming in off the Atlantic bringing us a mix of cloud and a few sunny spells with rain or showers at times.

"Westerly winds will generally be moderate, but occasionally fresh and gusty, particularly in coastal areas on Tuesday. Temperatures will be above average for early February with highs of 9 to 12C and lows of 5 to 8C with no frost. However, it's likely our weather will turn colder for Friday and Saturday."
