Ireland weather: Met Eireann’s unusual ‘storm’ warning as washout week with incessant rain forecast

Ireland is braced for a washout week, with incessant heavy rain due to last into the weekend.

The heavy showers will be mixed with thunder at times and it will feel humid with mild temperatures reaching highs of up to 18C.

It’s not all bad news though, as Met Eireann says there will be sunny spells at times, while temperatures will be "on the rise" from next week.

In its latest weather forecast, it said today will start off dry and sunny, before rain moves across the country with temperatures of up to 17C.

The national forecaster also issued an unusual ‘storm’ alert, saying the afternoon rain comes “with the possibility of embedded thunderstorms”.

Its Wednesday forecast reads: “This morning will be dry and sunny. In the afternoon rain, with the possibility of embedded thunderstorms, will move west to east over the country. Southerly winds will increase fresh then strong and gusty. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C degrees.

“Rain will clear early tonight and southerly winds ease light to moderate, staying fresh along western coasts. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 8C, colder in isolated spots in Leinster and Munster.”

According to Met Eireann, tomorrow will be the driest day of the week, but there is still a risk of showers in the north and west.

It said: “Mainly dry and sunny on Thursday, isolated showers will develop in Connacht and Ulster in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C in moderate to fresh south to southwest winds, strong near western coasts.

“Thursday night will be mainly dry. Rain will develop in the west of the country and turn heavy in places towards morning. Lowest temperatures of 8C to 10C in moderate southerly winds.”

Looking ahead to Friday, more “heavy showers” can be expected in the afternoon.

Met Eireann said: “Rain on Friday morning will clear to scattered heavy showers and sunny spells in the afternoon. Highest temperatures 14C to 16C in moderate to fresh westerly winds.

“Showers will ease Friday night and it'll be dry for a time with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 7C to 8C with moderate to fresh westerly winds.”

Anyone planning outdoor activities for the weekend is advised to take an umbrella - particularly on Saturday when incessant rain is due.

The national forecaster said: “There'll be further afternoon showers on Saturday with a spell of more persistent rain Saturday night. Highest temperatures 15C to 17C in light to moderate southwest winds.

“There'll be a few further showers on Sunday with temperatures up to 18C in light to moderate southerly winds.”

Met Eireann says that its current indications suggest there will be further showers Monday and Tuesday with light winds and temperatures "on the rise".
