Ireland weather: Met Eireann predicts washout week before weekend highs of 19C

It is set to bucket down rain before it clears up this weekend - with sunshine and highs of 19C forecast.

Met Eireann has forecast widespread showers, heavy rain and possible thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.

However, the wet conditions will dry up on Friday and Saturday with sunny spells and hazy sunshine expected.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly said however, that next week there could be a drop in temperatures as Northerly winds blow over Ireland.

"Some better news in the weather outlook with Friday Saturday looking better and very little rainfall, rain Sunday but next week sees high pressure trying to build in close to Ireland with less rainfall," he wrote on Carlow Weather twitter account..

"Exact details for next week a little uncertain but far less showery looking, however winds look likely to be Northerly with cooler air over us."

Here is Met Eireann's forecast for the rest of the week:

Wednesday, May 10

Mostly cloudy this morning with widespread outbreaks of rain and drizzle. It will become brighter this afternoon but there will be frequent showers. Some will turn heavy and possibly thundery, particularly in the northeast. Highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees in a moderate to fresh westerly wind.

Showers or longer spells of rain will continue tonight, most frequent in the northwest at first but extending southeastwards across the country overnight. Some of the showers will be heavy. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with mostly light to moderate westerly or variable winds, but fresher near Atlantic coasts.

Thursday, May 11

Widespread showers will continue tomorrow morning, some turning heavy and prolonged. During the afternoon they will start to die out from northern areas but will persist further south, with thunderstorms possible in the southeast. By evening, most places will be dry and sunny. Moderate to fresh northwest to north winds in the south and west, light and variable winds in the north and east. Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees.

Isolated showers early on Thursday night but otherwise it will be dry with long clear spells. Patches of mist and fog will develop in light northerly or variable breezes. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Friday, May 12

Mostly dry with sunny spells although isolated showers may develop in the afternoon and early evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with a light northerly breeze.

Friday night will be dry with long clear spells. Areas of mist and fog will develop in a light and variable breeze. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees.

Saturday, May 13

Mist and fog will clear during the morning, leaving a mostly dry day with spells of hazy sunshine. Isolated showers are possible in the afternoon and cloud will thicken from the west during the evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with light and variable breezes.

Saturday night will be cloudy and rain or drizzle will move into the west and north. Southerly winds will be generally light but will increase moderate to fresh in the west. Milder than recent nights with temperatures staying above 9 or 10 degrees.

Sunday, May 14

Rain and drizzle will move southeastwards across the country on Sunday morning and afternoon, with sunshine and isolated showers following from the northwest. The rain will likely clear from the southeast by evening. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, with light to moderate southerly winds at first, turning northwesterly and increasing moderate to fresh after the rain.
