Ireland weather: Met Eireann predict Sunday washout for one region as rare sunny spell arrives

Met Eireann’s Sunday forecast predicts that most areas are in for a rare sunny spell today - but one region will be hit with brutal heavy showers.

Today will bring sunny spells and occasional heavy rain, which will be most frequent in the west with thunderstorms and localised flooding possible.

The best of the longer drier intervals will occur in the east and northeast.

The sunny weather will be short-lived as rain is due to developing early tonight in the southwest and will spread northeastwards to all areas overnight.

Monday will be mild and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain but during the afternoon, the rain will become heavier in the west and will spread eastwards with localised flooding possible.

Tuesday will bring some more sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy with isolated thunderstorms possible.

Wednesday will start off bright with sunny spells and some showers further west.

During the afternoon, outbreaks of rain will develop in the west and spread across the country through the evening and early night.

Thursday will be mild, humid, and mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Later in the day, more persistent rain will spread eastwards across the country.

As for the rest of the week, “Current indications suggest that Friday and next weekend will continue mild and unsettled with rain or showers at times, especially over the western half of the country.”
