Ireland weather: Met Eireann pinpoint where rain will be worst with warning issued

Met Éireann have warned that the entire country is at risk of being hit badly by rain over the next 48 hours - but named two counties in particular as facing a bit more danger.

The latest forecast shows similar conditions to those that we saw at the weekend, with heavy rain and wind hitting Ireland to cause a bit of havoc on the roads and bring down power lines.

Saturday and Sunday saw areas in the south west hit particularly badly.

In Met Eireann's newest update, it seems we could be in for a similar situation on Tuesday and Wednesday - with the national forecaster's province-by-province prediction noting that Cork and Kerry will see heavier showers on Tuesday than normal.

They warn: "Rather cloudy today with a little rain or drizzle mainly affecting Cork and Kerry. Becoming breezy later with moderate to fresh east to southeast winds increasing fresh to strong. Highest temperatures of 14 to 16C.

"Rain in the southwest will extend to all areas overnight. The rain will be heavy and may cause flooding. Lowest temperatures of 10 to 13C, with fresh easterly winds."

You'll notice a line about flooding in there and that's because there's a status yellow weather warning in place for eight counties from 4am on Wednesday morning.

It affects the south of the country (Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford) and states: "Spells of heavy rain overnight Tuesday through to Wednesday night will lead to localised flooding."

Met Eireann are indeed worried it could last longer than that though, as it's in place until 10pm tomorrow evening.

There is slightly better news coming on Thursday though, as the latest weather models hint at better conditions, with Met Eireann saying: "Many places dry on Thursday with sunny spells. Cloudier weather in the south will rain and drizzle over southern counties. Highest temperatures of 14 to 16C with moderate to fresh southeast to east winds."
