Ireland weather: Met Eireann give 'unusual' sunny forecast as date for return of miserable conditions confirmed

Ireland is set for a largely dry end to the week as settled conditions remain across the country.

Met Eireann has forecast mostly sunny spells over the coming days as temperatures reach highs of up to 17 degrees.

However, the weather will take a turn later in the month as temperatures decrease, with an increase in heavy rainfall likely from the 22nd.

A forecaster said: "Sunny spells tomorrow but the odd light shower is possible. Temperatures of 13c to 17c and best of the sunny spells in morning and evening. Weather models still showing largely dry and settled weather for next 7 days with chance of showers increasing from the 22nd."

They added: "The outlook continues to look settled for the next 7 days with no real rainfall likely. GFS weather model keeps it dry up to the 24th but ECMWF brings a risk of rain from the 22nd. Temperatures dropping back from tomorrow also. Let's hope GFS is right and @NPAIE holds dry."

Here's a more detailed look at Met Eireann's forecast.

Thursday, September 17

Today will be mainly dry with a fair amount of cloud and some sunny intervals, with a few isolated light showers possible in northern areas.

Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with moderate north to northwest breezes.

Tonight will be dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog. It will be quite chilly with lowest temperatures of 3 to 8 degrees, the coolest in the midlands.

Friday, September 16

Friday will be largely dry with bright or sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees with light to moderate northerly breezes.

The night will be dry, turning quite chilly with lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees with very light variable or northwest breezes.

Some mist and fog patches are likely to form.

Saturday, September 17

Saturday morning, mist and fog patches will gradually clear to give a largely dry day with a fair amount of cloud and some bright or sunny intervals.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees with light variable breezes.

Saturday night will be dry in most areas, with some patches of mist or fog. Cloud will thicken from the north and will bring patchy rain or drizzle to northern counties overnight.

Lowest temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.

Sunday, September 18

Sunday, there'll be some patchy light rain or drizzle for a time over the northern half of the country. It will be drier further south.

However, later in the day, some bright or sunny spells will develop in many areas.

Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with light variable or northwest breezes.

Current indications suggest that Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will continue dry apart from a few showers or patchy drizzle at times.

Temperatures will reach the mid to high teens.

From Thursday onwards, it looks like there will be some rain.
