Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts week of 'heavy' rain ahead before turning point

We are in for a week of "heavy" rain ahead with low pressure dominating and possible thunderstorms over the next few days.

Met Eireann has predicted a week of "very unsettled" weather with their long-range forecast stating we can expect "higher than average precipitation amounts" for July this week.

Monday is expected to bring outbreaks of "heavy and persistent" rain but with some brighter spells and a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the evening.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be much the same with showers and spells of sunshine on the forecast.

However, there should be a turning point later in the week where temperatures should slightly pick up.

A forecaster said it should turn warmer from Friday, with temperatures reaching into the low 20s into the weekend.

Here is Met Eireann's full forecast for the week ahead:

Monday, July 3

Outbreaks of rain this morning, heavy and persistent in parts, and giving way to brighter spells with showers. Better sunshine this afternoon and evening but scattered showers will continue, and a few many be heavy with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. Quite windy again, with moderate to fresh and gusty westerly winds. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees.

Showers will become mostly confined to the west and northwest tonight with clear spells developing elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in light to moderate west to southwesterly winds.

Tuesday, July 4

Another day of showers and sunny spells tomorrow. Some showers may turn prolonged with the potential for thunder. However, it will become drier in the west and northwest in the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees in moderate westerly winds veering northwesterly later.

Becoming largely dry with clear spells on Tuesday night but more showers will reach Atlantic coastal counties by morning. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light west to southwesterly winds. A few mist patches in places too.

Wednesday, July 5

Showers and spells of sunshine once again on Wednesday, some turning heavy and possibly thundery in the afternoon in parts of the east and north. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees, coolest in Atlantic coastal areas, in moderate west to southwesterly winds.

Thursday, July 6

Some early sunshine especially in the east and north but cloud gradually increasing from the Atlantic bringing outbreaks of rain which may turn heavy and persistent later especially in western parts. South to southeast winds freshening too and increasing strong near the west coast. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees.

Friday, July 7

Current indications suggest that it will be unsettled for Friday and the weekend with occasional showers or longer spells of rain. Some heavy or thundery downpours may occur but in the sunnier gaps it will feel warm as it turns more humid with temperatures in the high teens or low 20's. It could be breezy or windy at times too.
