Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts ominous change after 18C sun as 'January conditions' to hit in days

Ireland could be hit by a cold snap next week with weather more similar to January than April.

Temperatures will dip close to zero overnight in the coming days, with the potential for wintry showers too.

Met Eireann says the big change will be evident from Wednesday when it will become "noticeably colder".

According to one weather expert, the potential for snow is a result of a blast of cold air next week.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather said: "Confidence increasing on the weather models for a blast of cold weather next week with a risk of some wintry showers. April could start off more like you’d expect January to!"

Before then, Saturday will see the mini-heatwave continuing, with any lingering mist and fog patches clearing early as the morning sun shines across the country.

Met Eireann says there will be good long clear and sunny spells that will persist across the country with highs reaching 14 to 18C and it will stay dry too with light winds.

A little cloud will bubble up in the northwest but it will continue to stay dry into the evening with light winds. Some mist and fog patches will also develop late evening and overnight with lows of around 1 to 4C expected.

A forecaster said: "Good strong sunny spells to start Sunday morning and this will help clear away any lingering mist and fog patches from the night before. It'll be another dry day with clear skies and light winds. Our highs should reach 13 to 17C.

"A clear and dry start to the evening [on Sunday] but a touch more cloud will build across the northwest where there may be a light shower or two. A clear and mostly dry night with light winds and lows down to 2 to 5C with some mist and fog patches.

"Another calm and dry start [on Monday] with the morning sun clearing away any lingering mist or fog. It'll be a day of cloudy periods and sunny spells but there will be one or two isolated showers developing too.

"Winds staying rather light with highs of 13 to 16C. The showers will clear in the evening but a little cloud will linger into the night with lows of 2 to 5C."

They continued: "A little more of a cloudier day Tuesday as the winds turn northerly and bring a cold change to the weather.

"Staying dry initially but a few showers will develop later in the day and our highs will reach 12 to 14C in a northerly breeze. Cooler overnight with temperatures falling back down close to freezing too.

"A change expected on Wednesday as cooler air blankets the country with scattered showers, some possibly wintry, feeding down throughout the afternoon and evening. Cloudy skies and noticeably colder too with highs of 6 to 9C in a brisk northerly wind.

"Rather similar conditions will follow on from Wednesday [on Thursday] with a brisk northerly breeze bringing down scattered showers, some possibly wintry on the hills. Feeling cold with highs of 6 to 8C."
