Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts miserable conditions as June bank holiday approaches before sizzling U-turn

The weekend of good weather is coming to an end after highs of 20C basked some areas in late-spring sunshine.

However, the week ahead is set to bring miserable conditions with rain, cloud and cooler temperatures forecast.

Met Eireann is forecasting showers every day until the mid-week, with the weather for the June bank holiday weekend not looking much better.

However, the good news is that the following week will bring higher temperatures and drier conditions.

This is in line with the usual 'Leaving Cert weather' that brings sunny spells in the second week of June.

Before then, Sunday will be mostly dry with sunny spells, however the odd light shower is possible in the north and east.

Northeast breezes will be mostly light or moderate in strength, but winds will increase strong at times along coastal parts of the west, southwest and southeast this afternoon.

Highest temperatures will range from 13 to 18C, warmest in the southwest and coolest in the north.

Here is what a Met Eireann forecaster had to say:

SUNDAY NIGHT: Clear spells to start tonight, but cloud will build from the north overnight bringing a few light showers. Lowest temperatures generally 3 to 7C, but temperatures possibly dipping a little lower locally with a touch of grass frost possible mainly in the midlands area. Some mist and isolated fog patches will form under a light northwest or variable breeze.

Ireland is set to experience unsettled weather over the June bank holiday weekend. (WXCHARTS)

MONDAY : Cloudier than recent days with scattered showers, although some bright or sunny spells will occur at times. A much cooler day with highest temperatures of 11 to 14C, and a light to moderate northwest breeze.

MONDAY NIGHT : Scattered showers dying out early in the night, becoming largely dry and clear. Some showers will continue to feed onto northern coasts in a light northwesterly breeze. Chilly with lowest temperatures of 4 to 7C.

TUESDAY : Scattered showers with a mix of cloud and some bright spells. Mostly cloudy across Ulster with a more prolonged spell of rain there. Some heavier bursts are possible near the north coast. Highest temperatures 11 to 15C with light to moderate westerly breezes.

TUESDAY NIGHT : Cloudy with outbreaks of rain over the northern half of the country, with heavier falls possible locally. Mostly dry with some clear spells and just isolated showers further south. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9C with a light westerly wind.

WEDNESDAY : There will be further showers on Wednesday, with the odd heavy one in the north. Temperatures rising slightly with highs of 12 to 16C, reaching 17C in southern areas, with light to moderate northwest winds. Showers will ease later in the day becoming clear early in the night. Overnight lows of 5 to 8C.

THURSDAY : A drier day with sunny spells and just a few light showers developing. Winds remaining light, becoming northeasterly, with highs of 15 to 17C.

FURTHER OUTLOOK : Some uncertainty but there are signs that it will become mainly dry and settled later next week. Temperatures will rise into the high teens, possibly into the low 20s.
