Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecasts dramatic change as 'winter 2.0' on the way with -3C cold snap

The end of the 'heatwave' is unfortunately in sight with the weather set to become dramatically different in days.

Met Eireann says the warm conditions will continue on Sunday and Monday when highs of 18C are expected.

However, temperatures will dip to below freezing during the week, with Thursday night set to be particularly chilly with lows of -3C.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather questioned whether "winter 2.0" is on the way in the days ahead thanks to the arrival of a cold snap.

Before then, Ireland can bask in another day of glorious weather on Sunday with early morning mist clearing to leave another dry day with long spells of sunshine.

There may be a few showers in the west and northwest later, with highest temperatures of 13 to 18C, coolest along the east and south coast, in light easterly or variable winds.

Sunday night will be mostly dry with clear spells, as any showers in the west and northwest die out.

Winds will be light and variable so patches of mist and fog will develop, with lowest temperatures of 1 to 5C generally but possibly dipping near freezing locally.

A forecaster said: "Any mist and fog patches will clear on Monday morning. Most areas will stay dry with sunny spells, however there will also be isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17C, coolest along the east and south coast.

"Dry with clear spells [on Monday night]. Winds will stay light and variable so patches of mist and fog will develop overnight. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5C.

"On Tuesday there will be sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 10 to 15C, mildest in the southwest.

"Cloud will increase on Tuesday night and there will be further scattered showers, along with patches of mist and fog. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 5C.

"Wednesday will be mostly cloudy. There will be scattered showers in the morning and more persistent rain will move southwards over the northern half of the country during the afternoon and evening.

"This will introduce colder air into northern areas, with mid-afternoon temperatures of 4 to 7C in Ulster, but milder temperatures of 9 to 12C elsewhere.

"Rain will continue moving southwards on Wednesday night, followed by clear spells and scattered showers from the north. Some of the showers will turn wintry as temperatures drop down to between -1 and 3C."

They added: "Rain will gradually clear from the southeast during Thursday and there will be sunny spells and scattered showers everywhere else, some wintry. It will be colder than previous days, with afternoon temperatures of just 4 to 8C, and quite breezy in a moderate to fresh northerly wind.

"Mostly dry with long clear spells [on Thursday night], although a few showers are expected in the north and northwest. Cold and frosty with lowest temperatures of -3 to 1C.

"Friday is looking cold and bright with sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 5 to 8C with light northerly winds."
