Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast two possible snow days as freezing period hits

Met Eireann’s latest forecast predicts showers of snow and sleet across the weekend.

Most accumulations will occur on high ground, however, where sleet and snow are not falling it is likely heavy rain will take its place.

Tonight, conditions will be breezy with rain moving into the southwest early on, spreading northeastwards overnight.

The rain will turn heavy in parts, especially in the southwest - however, Ulster and north Leinster will stay dry.

On Friday, wet and breezy weather will start off the day with outbreaks of rain spreading northwards - some will be heavy in places.

The rain will slowly clear northwards during the afternoon and evening, with heavy showers following from the southwest that may lead to spot flooding - temperatures will also drop to -1.

Thunderstorms and hail are possible, particularly over the southern half of the country.

There will be a good deal of dry and bright weather to start the day on Saturday, however, scattered showers will develop through the morning, and will be most prolonged near northwest coasts.

Clouds will build from the south through the day with “rain spreading across the southern half of the country by evening, turning heavy at times with the chance of sleet and snow, particularly over high ground.”

It will also become quite windy too as easterly winds increase fresh to strong through the day, with highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Overnight on Saturday, it will be wet and windy with outbreaks of rain becoming widespread and turning heavy at times.

Some falls of sleet are possible, with the chance of snow on high ground with fresh to strong southeasterly winds and lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees.

Closing out the week on Sunday, things will continue to be wet and windy for most of the day with widespread showery rain - possibly turning wintry in places - and fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds veering westerly.

Some drier and brighter spells will develop in the evening heading into next week and highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees are expected.
