Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast Scandinavian air to bring freezing snap and answer snow question

Ireland is set for a cold snap to blast the country from Wednesday as the last of the good weather fades to make way for a much colder air mass.

Met Eireann has predicted that sunny spells will remain today before giving way to widespread shattered showers.

Wednesday will mark a huge change in conditions as Wicklow will see the worst of the wintry showers.

A forecaster said: “While it will turn cold from Wednesday the latest snow depth charts only really show snow for the Wicklow Mountains here in Ireland. Very little rainfall expected up to Sunday then a risk of a band of rain on Sunday but track is uncertain.”

A cold chill will be in the air as temperatures drop to -3 degrees for much of the remainder of the week, causing mist and fog on most mornings, so driving with care is advised.

Here is a more detailed look at Met Eireann’s forecast.

Tuesday, March 29

Mist and fog will clear away during the morning, but patches may linger on coasts for a time.

Good sunshine will develop for most through the morning, with scattered showers developing in the afternoon, most frequent in the north.

Highest temperatures of 11 to 16 degrees, mildest in the west and southwest, in light northeasterly or variable breezes.

Scattered showers will ease for a time before picking up again later in the night, mainly in the north and east.

Cloud will also build from the north during the night, and mist and fog patches will develop mostly light northerly or variable breezes.

Lowest temperatures of 1 to 5 degrees generally, dipping lower locally.

Wednesday, March 30

Mist and fog will clear away tomorrow morning, leaving a day with a mix of cloud and sunny spells with scattered showers, driest over the western half of the country.

Colder air with clearer conditions will push down from the north during the afternoon and evening, with highest afternoon temperatures over Ulster of just 5 to 8 degrees.

Highest temperatures elsewhere in the early afternoon of 8 to 13 degrees in mostly moderate northeasterly winds, fresher in the west, northwest and southeast.

Largely clear overnight and dry for most as showers become mostly confined to eastern parts, possibly turning wintry at times on high ground.

Much colder than recent nights with lowest temperatures of -3 to +1 degrees with frost developing in mostly moderate northeasterly winds, fresher in the southeast.

Thursday, March 31

Frost will clear in the morning to leave a day with good sunshine interspaced with well scattered light showers.

Noticeably cooler throughout the country, with highest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in mostly moderate northerly winds.

Largely dry and clear, though, there will be some showers near coasts. Another cold night with lowest temperatures of -3 to 0 degrees, with frost developing again in light to moderate northerly breezes.

Friday, April 1

A largely dry and bright start to the day, but cloud will push in from the north through the day, along with a few light showers.

Highest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees in light to moderate northerly breezes.

Dry overnight with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees with light northerly breezes backing westerly.
