Ireland weather: Met Eireann forecast one area to see 'sunny spells' as heavy rain and flooding batter rest of country

Ireland is set to see a wet and windy start to the weekend. However, showers will clear as we approach the afternoon, with some dry and bright spells appearing.

Met Eireann has forecast Leinster and Munster to see the best of the conditions as temperatures reach highs of 17 degrees today.

Unfortunately, further rain will return during the evening with the risk of spot flooding.

A forecaster said: “Heavy showers moving North after some high rainfall totals with over 30mm in parts of the South.”

Today, October 22

Cloud and showery rain will persist in the north and west this morning, but there will be dry weather with sunny spells across most of Leinster and Munster.

These drier and brighter conditions will slowly move northwards this afternoon and evening while more showers move into the south.

There will be some heavy showers at times throughout the day, which may cause spot flooding.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees, mildest in Leinster and Munster, with a moderate to fresh southerly wind.

Early tonight, it will be cloudy with showery rain in the south. It will be mostly dry, with clear spells and patches of mist and fog further north.

The rain will spread northwards across the country through the night, and there will be some heavy and possibly thundery falls, which may cause spot flooding.

Lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees with light east to southeast or variable winds.

Sunday, October 23

Sunday morning will be cloudy and wet in most areas, with some heavy and thundery bursts possible.

By afternoon the rain will be mainly over the northern half of the country and will clear from most areas by evening.

Sunny spells and scattered showers will follow the rain, with a few heavy and thundery showers possible.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees with a light south to southeast breeze.

More rain will move into the west and north on Sunday night. It will be drier in the south and east, but there will be mist and fog, which may turn dense in places.

Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees with light southerly or variable winds.

Monday, October 24

During Monday morning, the rain will clear from the west and north, and any fog will lift from the south and east.

For the afternoon, there will be sunny spells and scattered showers, but these will die out from most areas by evening.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 15 degrees with a light to moderate west to southwest wind.

Monday night will be mostly dry with clear spells, although a few showers will linger near Atlantic coasts.

Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees in a light to moderate south to southwest wind.

Tuesday, October 25

On Tuesday, there will be a lot of dry weather overall, with some hazy sunshine. However, a few showers will affect the south and west.

Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in a light to moderate southerly breeze.

Cloudy and wet as rain moves northwards over the country overnight, followed by showers.

Becoming breezy too, as a fresh and gusty southeasterly wind develops. Mild with temperatures staying above 10 to 14 degrees.

Wednesday, October 26

Breezy and blustery with scattered showers. Staying mild with highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in a fresh and gusty southerly wind.
