Ireland weather: Met Eireann confirm first blast of summer very soon as temperatures soar to 20C

Summer is set to arrive in Ireland with temperatures hitting 20C before the end of next week.

A dull and wet bank holiday weekend is not the start to May weather-wise many will have hoped for but in just a few days time it's all set to change.

The mercury is set to hit 18C a number of days next week before hitting as high as 20C by next weekend in a welcome summer blast.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: 'There is a bit more uncertainty towards the Friday and the weekend, but current indications are that high pressure to the south of Ireland will steer up some further spells and rain on Friday night with drier brighter conditions settling in for the weekend, with highs in the upper teens or even touching 20 at times."

The national forecaster is predicting temperatures as high as 17C on Tuesday and Wednesday before 18C on Thursday and Friday.

A forecaster said: "Fairly mixed bag with a good deal of cloud about and showery conditions at times, but it will become warmer and there will be some very pleasant conditions at times."

As for the next 48 hours, it will continue to be quite wet at times but mild temperatures will make it nicer in certain areas.

The Met Eireann forecaster added: 'Mostly cloudy this morning with outbreaks of rain most frequent in the south and east. Outbreaks of rain will turning heavy at times in the east this afternoon although a few brighter spells will develop also. Drier weather will follow from the north later bringing the best of the sunny spells to the north and east this evening.

"Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with mostly moderate westerly winds easing light and variable during the afternoon.

"Bank-holiday Monday will start fairly cloudy in the morning with scattered showers breaking up the cloud during the afternoon, allowing some better sunny intervals to develop. Highs of 13 to 17 degrees, in light northerly or variable breezes."
