Temperatures are set to plunge to as low as -9 degrees in Ireland as the cold snap continues.
Wintry showers will bring bitterly cold conditions with rain, sleet, and snow expected to move in from the northwest and then west tomorrow, according to Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather. Parts of the country are already facing teeth-chattering temperatures of -5 degrees with the mercury expected to plummet further later in the night.
Weather Alerts Ireland warned: "Temperatures are already down as low as -5 degrees at 8pm. Temperature are expected to drop to -7 or -8 with -9°C in local spots. Coldest away from coastal areas.

"Widespread frost and black ice is possible so please take care! Please check on vulnerable people and keep pets inside!"
There is a Status Orange low temperature/ice warning for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, and Roscommon. It is valid until 12pm on Friday.
Furthermore, there is a nationwide yellow alert for low temperature and ice until 12pm tomorrow. The Met Eireann alert reads: "Remaining very cold through the week with widespread sharp to severe frosts and icy stretches.
"Some showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur, mainly near coasts. Accumulations at lower levels are expected to remain low.
"Freezing fog will occur at times, with winds remaining light over land."
Tomorrow will start with frost and ice lingering in many areas before fog patches clear away. It will be a dry and sunny morning but showers will develop in the northwest, turning heavier and more widespread during the afternoon and evening, with the chance of small hail or isolated lightning near northwest coasts.
Showers will mainly be of rain, but turning wintry at times, especially over high ground. Afternoon temperatures of 0 to +4 degrees.
