Ireland weather: Expert says 'no heatwave' this week as he pinpoints end of warm weather and arrival of rain

Met Eireann’s status yellow temperature warnings were extended today until 7:00 pm on Tuesday evening, however, a weather expert has said the rain could be on the way before then.

The forecast for Monday morning predicts mist and fog in the west which will gradually retreat towards the coasts leaving a hot, dry and mostly sunny day.

Highs will generally range from 27 to 32 degrees, “holding a little cooler though near some coastal fringes, while some sea fog may persist along some Atlantic coasts tempering highs further.”

According to Alan O’Reilly of the Carlow Weather Twitter: “The hot plume of air moves us tomorrow with the hottest day of this brief warm spell. Temperatures quickly drop back to normal by Wednesday.”

His tweet went on to say that there is “no heatwave” because “that requires 5 days over 25c but tomorrow could be a record-breaking day all the same.”

Covering Tuesday’s forecast, he suggested: “Risk of rain returns again Tuesday but hit and miss showers. Some models also showing rain possible next Sunday but uncertainty around that yet.”

Met Eireann confirmed this in their own forecast stating that Tuesday will continue very warm over the eastern half of the country with highest temperatures of 23 to 27 or 28 degrees - but cooler further west with highs of 18 to 22 degrees.

On Tuesday morning, the rain will develop over the western half of the country and will extend eastwards through the afternoon and evening, becoming heavy at times with a possibility of thunderstorms developing.

Wednesday will see an end to the very warm conditions as temperatures return to more normal values of 16 to 20 degrees. There will be a fair amount of cloud and some scattered showers. A few sunny breaks too and light to moderate northwest breezes.

Thursday and Friday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells and a few showers and temperatures will range from 16 to 21 degrees with light breezes.

As for the rest of the week, the Irish forecaster says: “At the moment indications are that next weekend will become more unsettled with rain moving in from the southwest on Saturday and with further rain or showers on Sunday.”
