Ireland weather: Expert pinpoints arrival of "unsettled" change with grim conditions expected

Ireland’s forecast over the coming week, right up to Electric Picnic, seems to see the arrival of “a lot of rain” according to one weather expert.

Alan O’Reilly, of Carlow Weather, took to Twitter on Friday night to update those asking for a prediction on conditions ahead of the festival weekend.

Although he did suggest that things will change closer to the time, he says there are indications that a low-pressure system will make its way over Ireland in time for next weekend - bringing with it heavy downpours in some areas.

On social media, he said: “As I mentioned earlier a lot of uncertainty around next weekend with risk of a low system coming close to or over Ireland.

“Latest GFS brings it down West and then back up over Ireland which could bring a lot of rain. This far out is very hard to call and it is likely to change.”

Meanwhile, Met Eireann’s far-off forecast states that “while there is more uncertainty towards the end of the week, it does look to remain mostly mild and settled up to Friday, with cooler and more unsettled conditions developing for the weekend.”

As for this weekend, tomorrow, Saturday, will be mainly dry with sunny spells, but it will be hazy at times with the best of the weather in Munster and Leinster.

It’ll be cloudier in parts of Connacht and Ulster with some light rain or drizzle to the northwest, but this will clear towards the evening.

The highest temperatures of 17 to 22 degrees are expected in light variable breezes.

It’ll be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of light rain or drizzle on Sunday, particularly over the south and southwest where heavier showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible.

The highest temperatures will range from 17 to 20 degrees, in light to occasionally moderate easterly breezes.

As night approaches, it will remain mostly cloudy with isolated showers - some turning heavy at times with lowest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees.
