Ireland weather: Brutal Atlantic blast to smash country this weekend but Met Eireann forecast U-turn

Ireland is braced for a brutal weather blast from the Atlantic bringing persistent and heavy rain this weekend.

Met Eireann said: “A westerly airflow will be the main driver of our weather, with low pressure systems tracking eastwards over the Atlantic close to, or across, Ireland.”

It added: “Associated fronts will bring some rain and breezy spells to Ireland” over the coming days.

However, the miserable weather is not expected to last long as high pressure is due to return from next weekend, with some long-range models showing temperatures in the mid-20s.

The national forecaster has confirmed better weather is on the way, with its long-range forecast for the week of Friday, August 26 to Thursday, September 1 reading: “The signal is that high pressure will return over Ireland.

“This week will be more settled with drier than normal conditions in all areas. Temperatures are signalled to rise slightly, to become a degree above average across the island.”

In the meantime, the country can expect a washout weekend.

Giving its weekend forecast, Met Eireann said: “Quite cloudy on Friday with occasional sunny spells and scattered showers. Showers will be most frequent in the north and west with the occasional heavy one possible. Rather breezy in moderate to fresh and gusty west to southwest winds. Highest temperatures of 16C to 20C.

“Clear spells and scattered showers to start on Friday night. It will turn cloudier overnight with outbreaks of rain spreading from the west, most persistent in Connacht and Ulster. The rain will turn heavy in places. Mild and becoming humid with lowest temperatures of 10C to 14C. Remaining breezy in moderate to fresh southwest winds, strong at times in the west and northwest.

“On Saturday morning, a band of rain will spread across Connacht and Ulster, turning heavy at times. A drier start elsewhere with scattered showers and a few sunny spells. The rain will spread southeastwards through the day, turning light and patchy as it goes. Drier and sunnier weather will follow behind. Highest temperatures of 16C to 22C, warmest in the southeast, in moderate to fresh westerly winds, easing later.

“Saturday night will be dry for many with clear spells leading to some mist and fog patches in very light breezes. However, a few showers will continue near to the north coast and it will be cloudier in southern counties with some outbreaks of rain. Lowest temperatures will range 8C to 13C.

“Sunday morning will be mainly dry with sunny spells in central and northern areas, but with outbreaks of rain likely in southern parts. During the afternoon and evening, cloud will generally increase across the rest of the country with a little patchy rain or drizzle developing. Highest temperatures of 16C to 20C.

“A mild and humid night will follow on Sunday night, with outbreaks of rain, heavy in places. Temperatures generally not falling below 11C to 15C.”
