Ireland weather: 'Bad news' for Easter weekend as Met Eireann forecast washout before big change

Ireland is set to be hit by inclement weather over the Easter weekend with heavy rain and even hail forecast.

Met Eireann predicts an unsettled few days, with the worst of the showers to hit on Sunday.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather added that the outlook is likely to be pretty bleak on that day in particular.

He said: "Some better agreement on latest weather models and it’s not good news for Easter Sunday which looks very showery. Followed by cooler air retuning from Monday."

The drop in temperatures will mark a big change to the weather on Monday when it will feel "much cooler", according to Met Eireann.

Before then, Thursday will see mist and fog clearing in the morning to leave a cloudy day with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle mainly affecting the western half the country.

It will be mostly dry elsewhere with just occasional patches of light rain and a few brighter spells. Highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees, warmest in the east, in moderate southerly winds.

Thursday night will be quite cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle becoming more widespread and turning persistent in places. Some patchy mist and fog will develop also. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds.

A forecaster said: "Good Friday will start mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle. It will brighten up and become drier through the day with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers developing. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees in a light southerly or variable breeze."

Here is Met Eireann's forecast for the days ahead:

Overview : "Unsettled through the Easter weekend, with rain on Saturday followed by showers for Easter Sunday and Monday. Mild to start but turning cooler from later Sunday."

Friday night : "Mostly dry with clear spells and isolated light showers. Some mist and fog will develop overnight. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds."
