Ireland’s record-breaking summer heatwaves will soon be a distant memory as a shock Arctic blast sends temperatures tumbling.
The mercury soared to new heights in July and August, with new high maximum daily temperature records set for both months.
But as we near the end of September, Polar air is set to sweep down causing temperatures to plummet.

Met Eireann has warned that on Monday it will “feel chilly” with highs of just 13C to 16C in a “brisk northwest wind”.
Giving its overall forecast for the early days of next week, it said: “Temperatures remaining a little lower than the seasonal norm heading into midweek, with further showers in a northerly airflow.”
In the meantime, Thursday’s rain is set to clear through the afternoon bringing in drier, brighter spells with temperatures of 15C to 18C.
Giving its forecast for the weekend, Met Eireann said: “On Friday morning, any mist of fog will gradually clear. The day will bring a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C with light or moderate northwest breezes.
“Largely dry and clear with light isolated showers on Friday night. A chilly night with lowest temperatures of 3C to 7C. Light northwest winds.
“Well scattered showers on Saturday, but overall mostly dry with sunny spells. Another fresh day with highest temperatures of 14C to 17C and a light or moderate northerly breeze.
“Dry and cool with light northwest winds on Saturday night. Turning cloudier overnight. Lows of 3C to 7C.
“A cloudier day on Sunday with scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C. Turning breezy later in the day with moderate to fresh westerly winds developing.
“There will be a spell of rain during Sunday night. Overnight lows of 8C to 11C.”
