Ireland vs Scotland LIVE: Six Nations result and latest updates as Triple Crown clinched on Super Saturday

Ireland vs Scotland LIVE - (Brian Lawless/PA Wire)

Ireland vs Scotland LIVE

Ireland remained in the Six Nations hunt with a riveting 43-21 bonus-point win over Scotland that ended their opponents' hopes and left Andy Farrell's men needing a favour from England in France later on Saturday to secure a third title in four years.

With both teams in contention for the title at the start of the final day, the Super Saturday opener did not disappoint with the sides sharing three tries in the first 10 minutes before the ruthless Irish took control to lead 19-7 at halftime.

Three rapid-fire tries midway through the second half cut the deficit to five points but two Tommy O'Brien tries ended the visitors' hopes of a first title in 27 years, and extended Ireland's winning run over the Scots to 12 games.

The bonus point moved Ireland three clear of France but with a large points difference deficit they either need England to win in Paris for the first time in a decade or avoid the unlikely scenario of a draw in which France add a four-try bonus point. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend speaks

13:44 , Alex Young

"No (I haven't thought of winning the title). It's out of our hands, really. We can only do a certain amount. It's a game against an opponent that's had the upper hand on us for years.

“It's a challenge but a real opportunity for us to go and deliver an even better performance than we did last week. If we win the game we know there's something at stake. That performance (against France) was close to the best that we've seen from this group and from probably any Scotland team.

“I think the belief is there that when we get our game right it can put pressure on any defense, and when we get our defense in place we can frustrate opposition. But this is a different challenge. Ireland seem to play very well against us so that's what we're expecting."

Ireland coach Andy Farrell speaks

13:32 , Alex Young

”Of course you would like to dream (of the title) but the rest is out of our hands. But something is in our hands and we will focus on our performance, first and foremost.

“It would be nice to win something that is pretty special for us and that's the Triple Crown. It's been hard to come by over the years when playing for Ireland so we're desperate to get across that.

“(Scotland) were outstanding against France and we have been preparing for another Scottish performance like that. We'll have to be at our best to beat them as they are a side we have always respected."

'I feel like with this team ... we've been to hell and back together'

13:19 , Alex Young

Captain Sione Tuipulotu says Scotland have "been to hell and back together" but are brimming with belief ahead of their shot at making history.

The Scots will chase a first Triple Crown since 1990 and the chance to remain in contention for a maiden Guinness Six Nations title during Saturday's crunch clash with Ireland.

Gregor Townsend's side were written off following a dismal round-one loss away to Italy before bouncing back with successive victories over England, Wales and France.

Glasgow centre Tuipulotu is determined to break new ground in Dublin, saying: "We want to be the first of our kind, you know?

"That's a big motivation factor but it's not the be-all and end-all definitely.

"I feel like with this team, that I've played for in the last five years, in certain aspects we've been to hell and back together.

"Where my strength comes from or our strength comes from as a team is the hard stuff we've been through as well.

"To be resilient in those times is what gives me the most confidence that we'll be the best version of ourselves [today]."

'There's nerves and excitement and that's because we care'

13:05 , Alex Young

Captain Caelan Doris says Ireland have a "ton of motivation" to claim a fourth Triple Crown in five years and remain in the hunt for Guinness Six Nations glory.

Andy Farrell's side are targeting their best performance of the championship ahead of a crunch round-five clash with title rivals Scotland in Dublin.

Defending champions France, who host beleaguered England in the final fixture of 'Super Saturday', begin the weekend in pole position for the title in a three-way shootout.

"There's nerves and excitement and that's because we care," said Doris.

"We know what's at stake. We know we want to get it right. We know we want to finish the tournament with our best performance yet.

"There's obviously a Triple Crown on the line against our good old rivals Scotland so there is a lot at stake and with that comes nerves but tons of excitement as well.

"A week like this there is a ton of motivation, a ton of excitement about the place.

"There's been a good buzz in camp all week."

Ireland vs Scotland prediction

12:53 , Alex Young

Asked about the head-to-head record between these two nations, Ireland boss Farrell was keen to dismiss any suggestion that his team hold an advantage due to history.

"The record becomes irrelevant because they're a great side, a talented side, they're well coached, they've had some big wins,” he said.

"We're expecting a massive game and the record doesn't come into it because it's a proper Test match and a good week to get excited about."

That may be true, and anything can surely happen, particularly given the Scots will view this as their best shot at a maiden Six Nations crown in recent memory.

However, the fact that Ireland have bounced back from their opening day loss to France to give themselves an outside chance at glory as well means Scotland are unlikely to be able to catch the hosts unawares as they did to Les Bleus last weekend.

Another high-scoring affair is a real possibility, given both sides have been far from airtight in defence, but the Irish might just have the edge at home.

Ireland to win, by seven points.

What Scotland need to win Six Nations title

12:40 , Alex Young

Resurgent Scotland need to beat Ireland and hope that arch-rivals England then do them a massive favour in Paris in order to claim their first silverware since the final Five Nations Championship in 1999.

Any win over Ireland would be enough if France lose, while they would also take the title if they beat Ireland with a bonus point and France beat England without one.

Scotland would also lift the trophy if they lose to Ireland but get two bonus points and France lose to England, provided they keep their advantage over Ireland in terms of points difference and also deny them a bonus point.

A French draw coupled with a Scottish win would also be enough for Scotland, while both Scotland and France drawing would require Scotland to collect more bonus points than Galthie’s team, because of that aforementioned gulf in points difference.

What Ireland need to win Six Nations title

12:29 , Alex Young

The task is trickier for Ireland, who won the last of their six Six Nations titles in 2024, as they are two points behind France and Scotland going into the final day with a worse points difference than both.

Andy Farrell’s men must beat Scotland with a bonus point and hope that France then fall to England, with a non-bonus point win only enough if France then lose without picking up two bonus points.

A French draw would have required Ireland to win earlier in the day and pick up more bonus points than Les Bleus.

If Scotland and Ireland are beaten to the title by France, the winners of their match can at least console themselves with the Triple Crown, which Scotland have not won since 1990.

Scotland line-up

Scotland team news

There is also a change at tighthead prop, where Zander Fagerson is back in at the expense of D'Arcy Rae.

Ireland line-up

11:59 , Alex Young

Ireland XV: Osborne; Baloucoune, Ringrose, McCloskey, O'Brien; Crowley, Gibson-Park; O'Toole, Sheehan, Furlong; McCarthy, Beirne; Conan, Van der Flier, Doris (c)

Replacements: Kelleher, Milne, Bealham, Murray, Timoney, Casey, Frawley, Aki

Ireland team news

11:52 , Alex Young

Andy Farrell makes four changes to the Ireland team that held off spirited Wales in Dublin last time out.

James Ryan misses out with a calf injury, so Joe McCarthy returns in the second row to partner Tadhg Beirne, while Dan Sheehan is back at hooker in place of Ronan Kelleher.

Josh van der Flier is recalled at openside flanker as Nick Timoney drops to the bench, while Tommy O'Brien replaces Jacob Stockdale on the left wing.

Bundee Aki is among the replacements and poised to make his first appearance of the Six Nations after suspension, while three-cap Connacht lock Darragh Murray will come on to make his debut in the competition.

Finlay Bealham and Craig Casey also come on to the bench, where Ciaran Frawley remains the fly-half cover for Jack Crowley, over Sam Prendergast.
