Ireland striker Michael Obafemi to miss beginning of new Premier League season through injury

Republic of Ireland international Michael Obafemi will miss the beginning of the new Premier League season with a hamstring injury that he sustained on International duty.

The Burnley forward suffered a torn hamstring during Ireland's 3-0 win over Gibraltar at the Aviva Stadium last month.

The former Swansea star, who turns 23 on Thursday, will undergo surgery later this week and it is expected that he will miss the opening weeks of the new season.

Obafemi's injury is another unwanted headache for under-fire Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, who will be sweating on the fitness of his striker ahead of September's Euro 2024 qualifiers with France (September 7) and the Netherlands (September 10).

Since making his debut under Martin O'Neil in 2018, Obafemi has gone on to win 11 caps for Ireland and has scored two goals, one of which was a memorable 30-yard strike against Scotland last Summer.

He joined Burnley on loan from Swansea in January and scored two goals for the Clarets as Vincent Kompany's side bounced back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
