Ireland storm radar shows exact time thunder and lightning to hit your area amid Met Eireann warning

Ireland’s heatwave has come to an abrupt end with Met Eireann forecasting flash floods, thunderstorms and lightning.

A Status Orange thunderstorm warning is in place for 14 counties until 10pm tonight, with the national forecaster saying: “Thunderstorm activity expected. Due to the sporadic nature of development, not all areas will be affected.

“Heavy downpours of rain and hail will occur in places. Flooding where heavy downpours occur.”

The alert affects Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Kildare, Wicklow and Dublin.

In its overall forecast for Monday, Met Eireann said parts of Munster and south Leinster can expect the worst of the thunderstorm activity.

It said: “Scattered showers this afternoon and evening, turning heavy with thunderstorms in parts of Munster and south Leinster, with a continued risk of flooding. Highest temperatures this afternoon will return closer to average, ranging from 17C in the northwest to 22C in the southeast. Light to moderate northerly winds increasing fresh to strong along Atlantic coasts.

“Showers in the south will gradually ease tonight to leave a dry night for most with clear spells and a few well scattered showers. Lowest temperatures of 10C to 14C. Moderate northerly breezes will be fresh at times near northward facing coasts.”

With a stormy few hours ahead, many people will be wondering if and when their area will be hit.

Meanwhile, the weather for the rest of the week is expected to be quite changeable with above average temperatures and the east getting more rain than the west.

In its latest forecast, the State meteorological service posted on its website: “Cooler and quite cloudy on Tuesday with scattered light showers, though many areas will have a dry day. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C, mildest in the south. Breezy at times with moderate to fresh northerly winds.

“Showers will die out early in the night, leaving a dry night with a mix of cloud and clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 6C to 11C in light to moderate northerly breezes.

“A largely dry day with hazy sunny spells on Wednesday. Isolated showers are possible near eastern coasts. Turning cloudier from the west in the afternoon with light rain developing in the west by evening. Highest temperatures of 16C to 20C, warmest along the south coast in mostly light northwesterly breezes.

“Clear spells early in the night for eastern parts, however rain will extend eastwards from the west overnight. Lowest temperatures of 10C to 14C. Light to moderate southerly winds will develop through the night.

“A cloudy, damp morning on Thursday with some rain or drizzle in parts. Further showers or longer spells of rain will cross the country eastwards during the day, turning heavier at times. Some sunny spells also, especially in the evening. Highest temperatures of 18C to 22C with moderate southwesterly winds.

“Clear in many areas at first on Thursday night however scattered showers will move in from the west later in the night. Lowest temperatures of 9C to 13C with light to moderate westerly winds.

“Scattered showers with sunny intervals on Friday. Highest temperatures of 15C to 19C, with moderate southwesterly breezes turning fresh on Atlantic coasts.
