Ireland's World Cup opponents threaten strike action over bonus payments row

Ireland's World Cup opponents Nigeria’s preparations have been thrown into disarray - with the squad threatening to go on strike and boycott their opening game against Canada.

They are up in arms over the decision by the Nigeria Football Federation to cancel their match bonuses.

According to local reports, a team meeting was held upon their arrival at their Gold Coast World Cup base, and it was decided to strike action was an option.

The players were told last week that they would not be paid their match bonuses.

The reason given was that FIFA had announced a total player prize fund package, worth a minimum of €28,000 to each player at this summer’s tournament.

The payment from the global governing body has even led to a row in England between players and the FA over bonus payments.

The amount that players will receive from FIFA will climb per round, with each squad member from the team that wins the World Cup pocketing almost €250,000.

Nigeria’s players had been promised 30 percent of the €1.425m in FIFA money allocated to each association represented in this summer’s finals.

But that was withdrawn following the announcement of a separate package for players.

And it has led to the Super Falcons stars threatening to pull the plug on their clash with Canada on July 21.

“We are going ahead to press for our demands,” one senior player was quoted as saying.

“We are ready to go as far as missing our first game against Canada on July 21 because this has to stop.”

A final decision on whether or not to take action will be made closer to the tournament.
