Ireland's most expensive Easter egg will set you back a whopping €70

Most of us are used to whatever Easter egg we can get our hands on in the local supermarket, usually landing on a Cadbury or Nestle one.

However, for those looking for something a bit more luxurious and expensive, an egg costing €70 is now available in Ireland.

Arcane Chocolate’s ‘Treasure of the Rainforest’ egg was developed by Belgian-born chocolatier Erik Van Der Veken and is made from wild Bolivian cacao and filled with truffles made from the same cacao.

The Dublin-based company said that the cacao used for Treasure of the Rainforest eggs is of a “very tiny amount of cacao that is left untouched for native people to grow in the rainforests of Bolivia and this is true wild Criollo”.

“The only time these exceptional cacao trees are touched is when the trees are ready for harvest, and only then the local Chimane people from the region are allowed to harvest,” the product’s description said.

“Incredibly, this cacao is the same cacao as the ancient civilisations in South America used to consume 1500 BC. There is just something so special about this heritage, so we decided to dedicate an Easter egg to it with traditional Bolivian street art colours.”

The egg is coloured orange, green and pink, inspired by Bolivian street art colours.

Mr Van Der Veken said: “Wild cacao beans are less than 0.1% of the global cocoa harvest, so it is very special.

“The trend in general with food is that we are going artisan and people are willing to pay a bit more for it to be handmade instead of coming from a factory,” he said, Extra.ie reports.

A close second in terms of price is Arcane’s Fruits Rouges egg, which will set you back €66.

This egg is ombre pink and is made with Felchin white chocolate, Swiss mountain milk, freeze-dried yoghurt, raspberries and strawberries.

These luxurious eggs are available in Brown Thomas, Fallon & Byrne among others. They can also be ordered straight from Arcane and delivered nationwide.
