Ireland’s most battered bridge struck again by lorry in latest incident

Ireland’s most battered bridge has been struck again by a lorry in its latest incident.

The Shanty Bridge on the Blakestown Road in Mulhuddart is notorious for its low-hanging overpass, and has claimed the roofs of countless vehicles as its own.

And today, a lorry became the latest victim as it became wedged underneath the overpass this morning.

The structure that takes the N3 has caught out scores of unlucky truckers, with the brilliant Facebook page Ireland's Most Battered Bridge reporting on the latest incidents.

They uploaded pictures of the incident today and said: “I think we should enter our bridge into the Guinness book of records. The shanty bridge strikes again.”

One amused local commented: “That bridge is better than Harry Maguire let’s nothing through.”

Back in 2020, Sinn Fein TD Paul Donnelly confirmed that a new electronic sign was set up to prevent any more unfortunate crashes.

The Dublin West TD said on Facebook: "New electronic sign at Mulhuddart bridge.

"At long last, the council has finally put in new safety measures, an electronic sign, that should be enough for drivers to warn them not to proceed!

"Sinn Fein have been fighting for additional safety measures for several years at this spot so this is very welcome news."

The bridge is known for a number of unfortunate traffic mishaps over the years and the Facebook page shared the news with a cheeky post.

They said: "A huge thank you to Paul Donnelly TD and Sinn Fein Cllr Aaron O'Rourke who constantly lobbied Fingal County Council for new road traffic safety measures to be installed in our area.

"It only took about 20 crashes for them to listen. Thank you."

Dublin Live contacted An Garda Siochana for comment.
