IRELAND’S Michelle O’Neill will officiate at the women’s World Cup finals this summer.
The Wexford whistler has been selected as one of the 35 assistant referees for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand.
A regular on the League of Ireland scene, it will be her third World Cup having been assistant at the 2019 and 2015 tournaments.
In 2019, she ran the line in the final between the USA and the Netherlands.
O’Neill also officiated at the women’s European Championships in England last year, as well as the Olympic games in Tokyo.
In 2019, she was part of the first-ever female refereeing team at the Men’s Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea.
Ireland face co-hosts Australia, Canada and Nigeria in their group games at this summer’s World Cup, having qualified for a major tournament for the first time.
And of O’Neill’s appointment, Ireland manager Vera Pauw tweeted: “Congratulations Michelle. So so well deserved! We are all very proud of you!.”
