Ireland's Eurovison entry Brooke Scullion fails to make final as fans protest

There was uproar on Thursday night after Ireland failed to make the Eurovision final as there was heartache for their act Brooke Scullion.

The 23-year-old, stage name just Brooke, was one of 18 acts to compete in Eurovision semi final 2, along with well fancied singers like Poland's Ochman with his song River and Sweden's Cornelia Jakobs, who is among the favourites to win this year with Hold Me Closer. However, while both of those made it through to Saturday's Eurovision final, Brooke didn't join them as one of the semi final qualifiers, as her performance That's Rich didn't get enough from the public, including ones in the UK who were allowed to vote on Thursday.

Ireland haven't made a final since 2018 but there were many people predicting that with her song having a fresh, upbeat vibe Brooke would change that trend. As the likes of Australia, Belgium and Azerbaijan were all called as finalists by the Eurovision hosts, Ireland's hopes were fading and then when the last spot went to Serbia's entry Konstrakta who sang about Meghan Markle, their were dashed completely.

Brooke looked positive as the results came in but plenty of viewers at home were left raging on her behalf, particularly as the Eurovision final is now shaping up to be rather ballad-heavy. One furious fan, complaining on her grandson's behalf tweeted: "We are not happy in the UK. My grandson is gay and likes the upbeat female vocal pop songs and neither Albania, Ireland or the goth lady from Austria have made it through. There are too many ballads in the final so could you please change the line up before Saturday thank you."

Equally upset about Ireland's non-qualification, another wrote: "Call me biased but Ireland deserve their place in the final after that performance. In a ballad heavy year That's Rich is the banger we deserve and Brooke works that stage like she's been doing it for twenty years."
