Ireland on thunderstorm alert as Met Eireann warn of incoming downpours in latest weather forecast

Ireland is on alert for thunderstorms after Met Eireann warned of incoming heavy downpours.

Widespread showers are forecast for Tuesday, with the weather agency warning many will be heavy with some hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

It’s not all bad news however, as mild temperatures are also expected with the mercury reaching up to 16C in parts.

In its latest forecast for Tuesday, Met Eireann said: “Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain spreading northwards.

“During the afternoon and evening, some sunny spells will develop, especially in the west, but there will also be widespread showers. Many of the showers will be heavy with some hail and there will be a risk of isolated thunderstorms.

“Highest temperatures of 12C to 16C degrees with light southeast or variable winds.

“Showers will die out early on Tuesday night, leaving mostly dry conditions with clear spells, although it will become cloudier later. Some mist and fog will develop in light southerly or variable winds. Lowest temperatures of 5C to 9C.”

Wednesday will see a mix of sunshine and showers with temperatures increasing again.

The national forecaster said: “Wednesday morning will be mostly cloudy and some showers will develop in the west. During the early afternoon the showers will begin to die out and there will be some sunny spells too.

“Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C with a light southwesterly wind.

“Most areas will stay dry through Wednesday night, however it will become cloudier and outbreaks of rain and drizzle will develop near western and northern coasts. Lowest temperatures of 6C to 10C with light to moderate southerly winds.”

It will be more of the same on Thursday, before turning drier for Good Friday.

A forecaster said: “Thursday will be cloudy and outbreaks of rain and drizzle will move northeastwards across the country. Highest temperatures of 12C to 16C degrees with light to moderate southerly winds.

“It looks like Friday will be mild with scattered showers and the best of any sunny spells in the afternoon and early evening. Highest temperatures of 13C to 17C, coolest near the south coast, in a light to moderate southerly breeze.”

Its outlook for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend reads: “Currently it looks like there will be showers on Saturday, continuing on Easter Sunday. Staying mild with afternoon temperatures of 13C to 17C.”
