Ireland in direct line of Tropical Storm Alex as Met Eireann forecast exact date of weather U-turn

Tropical Storm Alex is heading straight for Ireland and is set to bring a period of unseasonable weather.

Met Eireann has forecast a washout week, saying heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds are all on the cards before a positive weather U-turn at the weekend.

Tropical Storm Alex is currently picking up pace in the Atlantic just days after causing weather chaos in southern Florida and Bermuda.

It is set to weaken as it heads towards Ireland, with its remnants turning into a low-pressure system that will bring wet and windy weather as it passes near the country.

Latest weather models - which are subject to change - show its centre staying west of Ireland, but still bringing the potential for strong gusts to the west of the country.

The national forecaster says the worst of the weather will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before conditions take a turn for the better as the tail end of the storm clears Ireland for the weekend.

Its forecast for Wednesday warns that it will be a breezy day with heavy rain at times and thunderstorms possible. Connacht and Ulster will see the wettest weather, with temperatures overall ranging from 15C to 18C in gusty winds that will be strong at times along the coasts.

On Thursday, Met Eireann says scattered outbreaks of rain will spread northwards over the country, but will turn mostly dry and sunny by the evening. Temperatures of 16C to 20C are forecast in a moderate to fresh breeze.

The breezy weather is set to continue into Friday, with the meteorological service saying there will be a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with a few heavy downpours possible. Temperatures will range from 17C to 20C in a strong and gusty breeze.

There is some good weather news for the weekend.

Met Eireann says that while it will continue breezy on Saturday, it will be a bright day with long sunny spells and just a few scattered showers. Highest temperatures of 17C to 20C are forecast.

It will be more of the same on Sunday. The national forecaster says that current indications suggest it will be another largely dry day with sunny spells and just a few showers, mainly in the north of the country. Maximum temperatures of 16C to 19C in moderate westerly winds.
