Ireland is set for a week-long heatwave with temperatures forecast to be hotter than Portugal.
Met Eireann has issued a rare eight-day weather advisory for the entire country which is already in place and lasts until next Monday, August 15.
The national forecaster said: “Ireland will experience a hot spell developing from Wednesday and continuing through the rest of the week and the weekend.
“Daytime temperatures will widely reach the mid to high twenties. Remaining uncomfortably warm overnight too.”

It has not ruled out issuing weather warnings over the coming days, saying that “updates will follow”.
Explaining the incoming scorcher, Met Eireann said:“High pressure will bring a prolonged spell of settled weather - very warm or even hot with possible heatwave conditions.”
Temperatures are expected to rise by the day next week and could hit the high 20s by Thursday.
This would make Ireland on par or even hotter than Portugal, where top temperatures of 24C to 27C are forecast this week.
Next week’s Met Eireann forecast for Ireland reads: “On Monday morning, mist and fog patches will clear away from most areas but may linger near some coasts. Otherwise, it will be another dry day for most with long spells of sunshine and with just the chance of a shower in the far northwest. Warm with top temperatures ranging from 19C to 24C in just light southwest or variable breezes.
“Long spells of hazy summer sunshine through the day on Tuesday with top temperatures ranging a warm 21C to 24C in light southwest or variable winds. Dry with clear spells on Tuesday night. Mist and fog will develop in places as winds fall light. Minimum temperatures of 11C to 14C degrees.
“Wednesday will be another dry calm and mostly fine day with prolonged spells of sunshine - any early morning mist/fog will burn of quickly. Warmer again with top values of 22C to 26C. Long clear spells overnight with some mist or fog developing once again in mostly light winds. Very mild with minima of 11C to 15C.
“Little change with warm or hot sunshine on Thursday and Friday. Temperatures will climb to the mid 20s or possibly even high 20s. Warm and close after-dark too with minima of 15C to 19C.
“High pressure is expected to remain positioned close to Ireland next weekend bringing mostly dry weather with sunny spells - temperatures are likely to remain well above average.”
While many people will be looking forward to the summer weather, Ireland’s meteorological service is also warning of possible impacts.
It is advising people to be aware of heat stress, especially for the more vulnerable of the population, a high solar UV index and a risk of water related incidents.
