Ireland heatwave: 34C air approaches but Met Eireann gives grim forecast for next 48 hours

The UK has put out a “heat alert” as they are set to sizzle with scorching temperatures of 34 degrees on the hottest day of the year this weekend.

The highest temperatures are expected on Friday, with the Met Office warning of temperatures in the low to mid-30s.

The heat alert levels range from 1 to 4, with level 2 meaning there is a 60% or higher chance of the threshold temperatures being reached across one or more regions for at least two days.

Highs of 26.1C were recorded in Cardiff, 21.4C in Edinburgh and 20.6C in Derrylin in Northern Ireland on Thursday.

While England and Wales will bask in the heat on Friday, it will be cooler in Northern Ireland and Scotland, which will both have rain.

Speaking to MyLondon, Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), said: “Temperatures are forecast to reach 30C in some parts of the south on Friday and we want everyone to enjoy the hot weather safely when it arrives and be aware of good health advice for coping with warmer conditions.

“During periods of hot weather it is especially important to keep checking on those who are most vulnerable, such as older people and those with heart or lung conditions. Make sure to look out for signs of heat exhaustion and follow our simple health advice to beat the heat.”

Firefighters have also warned that severe temperatures lead to an increased risk of fires.

And over here in Ireland it's set to be gloomy for the next 72 hours - here's what Met Eireann is forecasting.

Saturday

On Saturday, cloudy conditions will persist through much of the day in the southeast with some patchy rain at times.

Met Eireann forecasts bright or sunny spells developing elsewhere, along with isolated showers mostly in the northwest.

Ireland will see highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees in a moderate north to northwest wind.”

With Scattered showers coming out into Saturday night.

Sunday

Sunday morning will see sunny and isolated showers, with the weather brightening up on Sunday Afternoon with temperatures up to highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees in moderate northerly winds.

Monday

Monday will be mainly dry with light northerly winds becoming variable in direction and good spells of sunshine.

Temperatures will start to recover and are expected to reach 21 degrees in the afternoon widely across the country, although still a little cooler in west Ulster and north Connacht.
