Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher drops a hint over his Liverpool future

Caoimhin Kelleher could seek a move away from Liverpool next summer in a bid to secure regular first-team football.

One avenue into the Reds starting-11 closed last week when they were knocked out of the League Cup in a 3-2 defeat to Manchester City.

Kelleher is expected to feature in their FA Cup run, which kicks off on January 7 against Wolves.

But now that he has turned 24, regular match action is more important than ever.

“Obviously when I get my chance I need to take it,” he said.

“That is all I am focusing on really. I just need to be ready so I can step in if there's an injury or if I'm needed.

“I am quite relaxed, so I don't mind watching, but obviously I'd rather be playing but I just try to be as focused as I can be when I watch so I am ready if I am needed.”

He then dropped a hint regarding his thoughts ahead of next summer.

“Listen, I think we've obviously only just come back into the middle of the season,” said the Cork native.

“So we'll just see what the season brings and then after that we'll see, we'll see what happens after that.

“But I think at the moment, for now, I just have to be focused on trying to be ready for Liverpool.”

Kelleher had plenty of time to impress the Liverpool coaching staff during their training camp in Dubai, during the World Cup break.

And he was straight into the thick of it against a strong City side in last week’s League Cup fourth round.

“We had a good couple of weeks away in Dubai in the training camp,” he said.

“It's never easy to go straight back into an intense game like this, but I thought the players did really well to adapt and there was maybe 15 minutes or so where we were just trying to find our feet a bit.

“I thought we did quite well. Hopefully I get another game [against Wolves] to show that I am good enough at this level and put in a good performance.

“The manager was pleased with most aspects of the game and I thought we played some good stuff.

“So it was mainly positive from the manager to be fair because I think it was mainly a positive performance.

“I think the result aside, that wasn't positive, but in terms of it being our first game back I think it was a positive performance.

“I don't think there was too much between us really, both teams had chances and we could have been a bit more clinical but there wasn't much between us.

“We're disappointed to go out of the competition but I think we can take a lot of positives as well, we played some good stuff.

“Disappointment is the overall feeling. I don't think there was too much between the two teams, both teams had their chances, I think they were just more clinical.

“There wasn't too much between us.

“I made a few saves but that is my job. The team did really well to score two great goals, I just think we were a bit unlucky.”
