Ireland fans weren't given much to smile about at all last night as even prior to the deflating 1-0 defeat to Ukraine, supporters noticed a basic mistake in the match programme.
In it, Gavin Bazanu's club was listed as Bohemians when of course it was Shamrock Rovers where he made his breakthrough as a teenager before leaving the League of Ireland for Man City...in 2019.
The oversight drew the ire of fans, particularly those who support the Tallaght club, as seeing him go on to excel in English football during his loan spells at Rochdale and Portsmouth (never mind his international exploits) has been a source of pride for the Hoops faithful.
One commentator sarcastically worte: "Didn't know Gavin Bazunu moved to Bohs @bfcdublin @FAIreland @ManCity?"
While another similarly added: "Fair play to Bohs signing Bazunu just in time for the upcoming Dublin Derby."
Meanwhile someone else quipped: "Bold signing and good cover for Talbot."
It wasn't the only flaw noticed in the programme either as despite Ireland beginning their Nations League campaign with a loss to minnows Armenia, it was stated that they had gotten the group underway with a 'positive result and performance' in Yerevan.
The piece added that it "was just the start Kenny could have asked for".
One can only guess that the programme went to print before last Saturday's letdown.
20-year-old Bazunu hasn't featured in either game due to a back injury but has been in the news as a €12m move to Southampton appears to be on the cards.
The Saints are on the lookout for a new netminder following the decision of Fraser Forster to move this summer to Tottenham on a free transfer.
And they have identified the Ireland number one as their top choice.
Bazunu dazzled last season during his loan spell at Pompey, where he was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Season.
According to the reports, the two clubs have been in talks over the transfer for two weeks and are nearing agreement.
It's a further boost to his former Dublin club of Shamrock Rovers too as they look set to land funds from a lucrative sell-on clause that they negotiated with Man City at the time of his departure.
The Hoops have already made a significant return on his move to the Premier League champions, which brought in an initial fee of €500,000.
They have banked additional cash based on his competitive appearances so far for Ireland, with each cap earning a six-figure sum.
